Meadow Vista Safety and Beautification

OverviewPlacer Hills Road Aerial SectionThis is the website of a subcommittee of the Meadow Vista Municipal Advisory Council (MV MAC) that is investigating ideas to improve pedestrian and bike safety and beautify our community.

We report to the monthly MV MAC meeting, held at 6:00 pm the first Wednesday of the month.

At a recent MV MAC meeting, representatives of Placer County Planning Department and Public Works held a workshop on the design options and funding potential for improvements. According to the Meadow Vista Community Plan, the proposed road design standards of the main commercial corridor, Placer Hills Road (shown in aerial views) are illustrated below:

Standards for Bikeway Design in the Community Plan:

Problem areas for bike lanes exist along Placer Hills Road. One of these (along Placer Hills School parking lot) is extremely dangerous:

Placer Hills School Fence

Pedestrians have difficulty walking safely on each side of Placer Hills Road in many locations. Open ditches, "trails" that are slippery and dangerous when wet or frosty, and obstructions (like tree branches, barbed wire fences, etc.) are two areas that need improvement.

There are three marked crosswalks on Placer Hills Road, and they are all at intersections. No crosswalks exist at Combie Road and Meadow Gate Road intersections.

In addition, ingress and egress for parking lots are undefined in many locations, so moving vehicles often pose a threat to pedestrians and bicyclists.

Lighting is another issue that needs to be addressed, as well as landscaping and other means of beautification.

We need a comprehensive, long-term plan that meets our community's needs and preserves our rural character and small town qualities.

Placer County staff is currently working on a design for the central corridor (including safer bike and pedestrian passage), our committee is exploring sidewalk variations to establish a more rural feel for the concrete finish. Here are some ideas, including decorative stamping, coloring, and aggregate finish (small pebbles to make the sidewalks more rustic).
